Councillor Blatz was born and raised in the Camrose area. He grew up greatly influenced by his grandfather Ron, a lifelong community member and musician, and showed a unique interest in music from a very young age. His grandfather bought him an accordion at the age of eight, which set the stage for what would be a unique and rewarding future musical career. Councillor Blatz quickly progressed as an accordionist, and developed a specialty in an uncommon genre – old-time, Cleveland-style music, originally brought to North America from Slovenia and popularized by such artists as Frankie Yankovic in the 40s and 50s.

Councillor Blatz has competed and won first place at the Kimberley International Oldtime Accordion Championships three times. He also had the distinct honour of performing with Canadian, three-time Grammy award winner, Walter Ostanek. Councillor Blatz has performed for dances, polka festivals and special events across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, including many events in Camrose including the Big Valley Jamboree, Jaywalkers, fundraisers for the Friends of STARS, the Festival of Trees, the BVJ parade, the Senior Centre telethon, and the Camrose Country Opry among others. He has also enjoyed volunteering as an entertainer at many local lodges.

Councillor Blatz has long followed local politics closely. He sought out a volunteer position as a municipal affairs correspondent with the Camrose Canadian. His existing knowledge, dedication, ability to adapt quickly and close attention to detail proved to be invaluable resources. He was later hired by the newspaper as a full-time staff reporter. Prior to that, he worked in the IT field, including for Dell as a hardware technician, providing support to US corporate clients. Councillor Blatz currently works as an IT Consultant for an educational media company.

Councillor Blatz considers it a great privilege to serve the residents of Camrose and is dedicated to working together with the community and other members of council to achieve a truly exceptional quality of life for every Camrosian.

Councillor Blatz is a strong believer in people-centred, accountable and transparent governance. He deeply values keeping the lines of communication open between city council and residents and encourages anyone with a question, concern, comment, or suggestion to contact him anytime.

Councillor Blatz was elected to City Council in the 2010 Municipal Election and is serving his first term on Council.
